Tips for Use and Maintenance
Select dry, mold-free hard woods (like oak or birch) as your fuel source. Do not use hardwoods with a high resin content, as these will create excessive smoke during burning.
To properly maintain the stove before its first use, you will want to do a "pre-heat maintenance" by creating a small fire to warm the stove up slowly. This will allow the wood to acclimate to the heat generated by the stove and will help extend the life of the stove.
After using the stove, wait until the barrel cools down to room temperature before cleaning out the ashes from the stove and water from the barrel. Keep the stove clean and dry, and inspect the mortise and tenon structure and the stove body on a regular basis. Add wood preservative oil as needed.
When using the stove outside, you want to ensure that you are away from anything flammable or explosive, and that there is adequate smoke exhaust. When using the stove inside, you must have a proper chimney or smoke exhaust pipe to ensure that the area is well-ventilated.
