Many overseas sauna buyers tend to prioritise obvious specifications such as heater power, wood species and exterior design, but rarely notice sanding - the hidden core process that defines long-term user experience. As an original manufacturer, we have observed directly from production lines that poor sanding leads to a whole range of avoidable issues. Tiny leftover wood splinters will gradually rise to the surface in the high-heat, high-humidity sauna environment, easily scratching users' bare skin. Rough wood surfaces also create thousands of invisible micro-gaps where sweat, aromatherapy residue and moisture can seep in. This not only speeds up mould growth and discoloration, but also creates hidden spots for bacteria to accumulate, drastically shortening the service life of the sauna.
Unlike the basic sanding used for ordinary household furniture, sauna wood sanding must be engineered to withstand long-term exposure to 60–90°C temperatures and relative humidity levels above 60%. Our multi-stage progressive sanding system has been refined over more than 10 years of production iterations. Every single wood panel that enters our production line goes through 6 sequential passes with different grit abrasives, rather than a single quick sanding run.
In the first coarse sanding stage, we use 80-grit abrasive paper to quickly remove visible cutting marks, raised large splinters and major material imperfections left after the wood is cut to size. This brings the surface flatness error of every panel under 0.2mm, completely eliminating all visible uneven defects from the very start. After coarse sanding, workers wipe away all sawdust with a dust-free brush, before moving on to the second stage with 120-grit paper. This pass fully removes the deep scratch marks left by coarse sanding, and aligns the grain direction on the wood surface to prevent local fibres from lifting later under high heat.
Panels that pass the first two stages then go through two fine sanding steps with 180-grit and 240-grit abrasives, gradually refining surface smoothness. During these two steps, we strictly lower sanding pressure to avoid pressing too hard and leaving new deep scratches that ruin the wood's natural grain. After that, we add an ultra-fine 320-grit sanding step rarely used across the industry, where workers manually touch up edges, corners and joint gaps that automated sanding machines cannot easily reach. This ensures every surface that comes into contact with the user's skin is completely free of hidden burrs and sharp edges. In the final step, we buff every panel with industrial-grade wool felt wheels, creating a uniformly soft, smooth finish with zero rough patches that could catch on skin.
To eliminate leftover sawdust that could ruin later usage, our entire sanding workshop is fitted with a central vacuum dust collection system. Every finished panel goes through three rounds of high-pressure air blowing and electrostatic dust removal, to pull out every tiny sawdust particle trapped inside wood grain gaps. Our quality control team runs a full surface inspection on every board, wiping it repeatedly with a standard nylon test glove. If even a single wood splinter catches on the glove, the panel is sent back for re-sanding and never moves to the next production stage.
Many users have reported that in saunas finished with this process, they can walk barefoot inside or lean their skin directly against the wall panels, and feel the warm, smooth texture of the wood without any risk of scratches. The ultra-smooth surface has almost no micro-gaps that trap dirt, so daily cleaning only requires a quick wipe with a soft cloth to remove sweat and aromatherapy residue. This drastically cuts long-term maintenance effort, and ensures the wood retains its original fine texture and appearance even after years of high-temperature use. For home saunas, high-quality sanding is never an optional extra detail - it is the core foundational process that directly defines user safety, comfort and total product lifespan.
